We begin just below the Žabljak Crnojevića fortress, an abandoned mediaeval stronghold overlooking the river. From there, we enter a shallow, narrow channel surrounded by water lilies and rich birdlife hidden in the bushes along the water’s edge, with the fortress rising above us. We continue toward the village of Dodoši, paddling downstream along the Karatuna River. Dodoši is a picturesque village of old stone houses, once significant in the region’s history. In summer, it is surrounded by lush green fields, while in autumn and winter it transforms into a peninsula.

After passing the village, the river widens before leading us into what we call the "Amazon" – a narrow, forested channel that closely resembles a tropical river landscape. It’s one of our favourite spots on Lake Skadar. Here, the current gently carries you along, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Once we reach the open lake, we take a break for a swim and some rest. From there, we can either return the same way or complete a loop by re-entering the Karatuna River from the other side.

On the way back, we paddle upstream, though the current is mild and easy to manage. As we pass Dodoši again, there is an option to stop at a charming family-run campsite that serves fresh carp with salad. If you wish, we can reserve a table for a relaxing lunch in the shade before continuing back to the starting point.

I depart from Virpazar and can offer a pickup from there, or we can meet directly at the Žabljak Crnojevića parking area.

The full route is approximately 12 km, with the possibility to shorten it depending on your level. This tour is ideal not only for exploration but also for improving your paddling skills.
